New Site
Thanks for looking and if you have visited us before welcome back to the Herrings Net. After about a three year break and site absence work is now underway to put the site back on the Internet.
The thoughts on the style, content and make up of the new Herrings Net is going to a break away from a traditional website set up and be based more around a social networking site, a Facebook for us Herrings if you like! After all that is what the idea behind it was all about to start with. Fortunately the developments in web technology (and my know how) have improved in the missing years.
Our Past
If you have never heard of this site before then a very big welcome.
I originally started this back in about 2003/2004 and the site grew to about 50 members worldwide. It mainly consisted of a number of genealogical facts and a little history about the name plus a half hearted forum which ended up getting so heavily coated in spam it was a nightmare to control.
Despite a few firm followers the site gradually fell into disuse and the plug got pulled about 2006. But I never let go of the idea and always intended to revisit the project again in the future... sometime.

Inspiration
I guess what finally kicked started me to get my butt into gear and putting The Herrings Net back on the map was a comment from my Wife Debbie. As a keen Facebook follower she stumbled across a raft of Herrings on there with their own group, 300+ strong and growing. I'll admit I have never really got into Facebook aside from a passing glance but the idea was at least interested, not to mention popular. So while I'd never be as bold to say that this site is any competition to compete with Facebook, it is intended to be an alternative for the wider Herring Family to meet up, keep in touch and have a chat.
I hope you enjoy the site. It is early days yet and there will be a lot more content coming in the future. If you have any thoughts, comments or suggestions then please contact me on 'mail @ theherrings.net' or use the site contact form.
Thanks to you for being here.
